Primer sencillo de la banda que se convirtió en un éxito importante, se grabó en Londres donde el grupo llegó con apuros económicos, tan sólo 100 libras de ahí su nombre "Dire Straits" que puede traducirse como situación desesperada o estar en apuros.
La letra relata el ambiente en un bar de un grupo de jazz:
